Credit demonstrated by mastery
State Board of Education Policy GCS-M-001, “Course for Credit,” provides students the opportunity to personalize and accelerate their learning by earning course credit through a demonstration of mastery of course material.
CMS, based upon a body of evidence, will award a student credit in a particular course without requiring the student to participate in classroom instructional. In order to be awarded credit through the CDM process, students must demonstrate mastery of the course through a multi-phase assessment, consisting of:
1. a standard examination, which shall be the EOC/EOG where applicable, or a final exam developed by CMS
and
2. an artifact that requires the student to apply knowledge and skills relevant to the content standards and aligned to the selected course.
CDM courses will be graded pass/fail and will not accrue quality points. Therefore, grades in these courses will not be included in high school grade point average (GPA) calculations.
The following courses are excluded from CDM:
1. CTE work-based learning courses
2. CTE courses in a clinical setting
3. CTE advanced study courses
4. English Language Learner (ELL) courses
5. Healthful Living required courses
6. AP and IB courses; and
7. Occupational Course of Study, Preparation I, II, III and IV
